When is Dev Diwali in 2025?

Dev Diwali, also known as Dev Deepawali is Varanasi’s grandest festival of light and spiritual energy, and in 2025 it falls on Wednesday, 5th November. This unforgettable event takes place on Kartik Purnima, about 15 days after regular Diwali, when the holy city transforms into a dazzling panorama of millions of lit diyas and echoes with ancient chants and music.

Why is Dev Diwali celebrated?

Dev Diwali commemorates Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. According to belief, on this day deities descend from their abodes to bathe in the Ganges and bless devotees, making Varanasi’s ghats especially sacred.

What happens during Dev Diwali?

  • Ghats aglow: Over a million earthen lamps are arranged along the steps and on boats across 80+ ghats, producing a magical reflection on the shimmering Ganga.
  • Ganga Aarti: Special synchronized rituals at Dashashwamedh Ghat and others, with priests waving flaming lamps and chanting mantras as melodic music fills the air.
  • Fireworks & processions: Mythological floats, cultural parades, and a burst of colorful fireworks crown the evening.
  • Community rituals: Families, priests, and devotees offer prayers, light diyas, and remember ancestors to honor both divine and personal histories.
  • Boating & classical arts: Spectacular boat rides allow a panoramic view of the illuminated riverfront, while open-air classical music and dance performances evoke the city’s heritage.

What is Ganga Mahotsav & when is it celebrated?

Ganga Mahotsav is a five-day festival celebrating the cultural, musical, and spiritual heritage of Varanasi, culminating in Dev Diwali. In 2025, dates vary by source, but the festival spans early November, with most celebrations running between November 6th and 8th. Expect:

  • Classical music, dance, and drama evenings on the ghats
  • Boat races, handicraft fairs, and food bazaars
  • Daily Ganga Aarti ceremonies, adding to the grandeur

The final night—Dev Diwali—is the most popular and photogenic, as every ghat is illuminated for the gods’ descent.

Photographer’s Dream: What to Expect in Varanasi

For photography, Dev Diwali and Ganga Mahotsav stand unrivaled in India:

  • Golden Hours: Early morning mists on the Ganga create ethereal scenes, with boatmen and pilgrims shrouded in silvery light, ideal for fine art and documentary work.
  • Dusk to Night: Millions of diyas and the glow of Ganga Aarti produce dramatic contrasts, reflections, and silhouettes. Capture wide shots from a boat or close-ups of devotees lighting lamps.
  • Events & Details: Document processions, costumed dancers, spiritual rituals, and faces aglow with reverence and flame.
  • Ambient conditions: November brings cool, clear weather—comfortably crisp in the early morning and after sunset, minimizing haze, and enhancing color contrast in your images.

The result? Varanasi becomes a canvas of living light matched by few places on earth.
