Your Complete Guide to Lathmar Holi
If you think Holi is just about throwing powder in the air, you haven’t seen the Braj region in February.
Here, Holi isn’t a party; it’s a playful war. Long before the rest of India wakes up to the festival, the narrow lanes of Nandgaon and Barsana turn into a battlefield of shields, sticks, and vibrant chaos. This is Lathmar Holi – the only festival in the world where men are beaten up by women, and they travel miles for the privilege.
What is Lathmar Holi?
In simple terms, it is a tradition where the women of the village take charge. Men from the neighboring village arrive carrying heavy leather shields, singing provocative songs to tease the women. The women, in turn, “beat” them with heavy bamboo sticks (Lathis). The men are not allowed to retaliate; they can only defend themselves with their shields. It is loud, aggressive, incredibly colorful, and performed with a deep sense of devotion and community spirit.
Why is it celebrated? (The Legend)
This ritual is a reenactment of a 5,000-year-old story. Legend has it that Lord Krishna, the ultimate prankster from the village of Nandgaon, visited his beloved Radha’s village, Barsana, to tease her and her friends. Taking offense to his mischief, the women of Barsana chased him and his friends away with sticks.
Every year, the villagers keep this rivalry alive. It is a symbolic battle of the sexes, rooted in the romance and playfulness of Radha and Krishna.
Mark Your Calendar: Lathmar Holi 2026 Dates

- The Return: The very next day, the men of Barsana visit Nandgaon to get their “revenge”—or rather, to get beaten up by the women of Nandgaon!
A Photographer’s Playground
For a photographer, Lathmar Holi is the holy grail.
- The Light: The dust kicked up by millions of feet creates a natural filter, turning the sunlight into a golden, hazy mist mixed with red and yellow powder.
- The Action: You get split-second moments of impact—the Lathi hitting the shield, the splash of color, and the expressions of pure adrenaline on the men’s faces.
- The Vantage Point: The best shots aren’t from the ground (where you will get crushed); they are from the balconies above.
Can this fit into a Golden Triangle Trip?
Absolutely. In fact, it is the perfect detour.
Mathura and the Braj region are located right between New Delhi and Agra.
If you are driving from Delhi to the Taj Mahal, a slight detour brings you right into the heart of this action. You don’t need a separate trip; you just need a better itinerary.
What is IndiaFest by Travebrate?
We don’t just plan trips; we track culture. IndiaFest is our proprietary Android app designed to track the precise dates and locations of India’s most colorful festivals. While the internet gives you generic dates, IndiaFest gives you the local “muhurats” (timings) and village-specific schedules, ensuring you never land on the wrong day.

Why Plan With Travebrate?
Lathmar Holi is not a sightseeing tour; it is a logistical challenge. The crowds can swell to hundreds of thousands. Roads are blocked miles away from the temples.
Here is where we come in:
- Bespoke Itineraries: We plan your travel in India. Plan is unbiased. During your India visit, if there is any cultural attraction occuring, or if there are any season specific attractions we bring it to the table and weave you golden triangle along with that. Are you a Indian who would like to visit this festival alone? We plan that too, with the same precision and priority.
- Safety & Access: We arrange safe, reserved vantage points (like private rooftops) so you can witness the chaos without being stuck in the stampede.
- Context: We provide guides who understand the ritual, so you know why they are singing that specific song, rather than just watching blindly.
