Jallikattu

Jallikattu is a traditional bull-taming sport that is popular in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is typically held during the Pongal festival, which is celebrated in mid-January every year. The sport involves releasing a bull into a crowd of people, who attempt to grab onto the bull’s hump and hold on for as long as possible. The bull is not harmed during the event, but there have been instances of injuries to participants and spectators. Jallikattu has been a controversial sport due to concerns about animal welfare and safety.

Jallikattu Schedule for 2026

Jallikattu has been around for more than 2,500 years and is believed to have originated in the ancient Tamil Nadu region of India. It is considered an important part of Tamil culture and tradition, and is typically held during the Pongal festival, which is celebrated in mid-January every year. In most part of southern India, Pongal or Sankranti is celebrated with cattle. One can expect around 750 – 800 Bulls in a Jallikattu event released to be tamed by Tamers.

Rules of Jallikattu

The rules of Jallikattu are fairly simple. A bull is released into a crowd of people, who attempt to grab onto the bull’s hump and hold on for as long as possible. The person who holds on to the bull for the longest time is declared the winner. However, there are certain rules that must be followed to ensure the safety of both the participants and the bulls. For example, the bull cannot be harmed in any way, and it must be released from a holding pen rather than directly from its owner’s property. Additionally, participants must be at least 18 years old and must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the event. There are also strict penalties for anyone who violates these rules.
