The Ghee Abhishekam (May 29): The Neyyattam is a sensory marvel, as thousands of pots of ghee are poured over the swayambhu Shivalinga.

The Women’s Window: In keeping with ancient tradition, women are permitted to enter the Akkare shrine only during a specific lunar window. In 2026, this is from midnight on May 30 until the afternoon of June 20.

Kottiyoor demands a return to basics. This is raw, elemental worship.
Men: You must wear a Mundu (Dhoti) and remain bare-chested. No shirts or vests are permitted in the sacred enclosure.
Women: A Saree is the standard. While some temples are relaxing rules, Kottiyoor remains a bastion of tradition—choose a light cotton saree to navigate the humidity and the river crossing.
Footwear: Leave it at the riverbank. You will be walking through water and over smooth river stones.
Reaching the Wilderness
The Flight Path: Fly into Kannur International Airport (CNN). It’s a 1.5-hour drive (55 km) through winding Kerala roads.
The Rail Route: Get off at Thalassery or Kannur. From there, KSRTC buses run frequently, but for a true Malabar experience, hire a local jeep to navigate the mist-covered hairpin turns of the Palchuram ghats.
Can Everyone Visit?
Yes. Unlike many orthodox Kerala temples, the “Yaga” at Kottiyoor is generally open to all, including foreigners and non-Hindus, provided you respect the dress code and the sanctity of the silence.
